Short answer: Agadir to Marrakech is about 250 km by the A7 motorway and takes around 3 hours without long stops. It is a toll road, so keep some cash in dirhams. With a rental car you can collect it at Agadir Airport, drive up, and either keep it for day trips around Marrakech or arrange a one-way return.

Many of our customers combine the beaches of Agadir with a few days in Marrakech. The bus and grand taxis work, but a car lets you stop where you want, carry your luggage without stress, and use Marrakech as a base for the Ourika Valley and the Palmeraie. Here is how the drive works and how to handle a car once you are in the city.

The route: A7 motorway

From Agadir, follow the signs for Marrakech and join the A7 motorway. It is the fastest and safest option: two lanes in each direction, service areas with fuel and cafés, and a long section that climbs through the western foothills of the High Atlas, with wide views over the valleys.

A7 motorway
Distance About 250 km
Driving time About 3 hours
Tolls Yes, paid at toll booths. Carry cash in dirhams
Speed limit 120 km/h, with lower limits on some mountain sections
Fuel Service stations along the motorway
From experience: the mountain section has long climbs and descents. Respect the posted limits, which drop on bends, and use lower gears on the way down instead of riding the brakes. Speed cameras and police checks are common on this route.

Driving and parking in Marrakech

The old medina of Marrakech is a maze of narrow lanes, and most of it is not accessible by car. That does not make a car useless, but it changes how you use it:

  • Staying in a riad in the medina: leave the car in a guarded car park near one of the gates and walk in. Ask your riad which car park is closest; many will send someone to meet you.
  • Staying in Gueliz, Hivernage or the Palmeraie: most hotels have parking, and the streets are wider and easier to drive.
  • Traffic: expect scooters, bicycles, horse carriages and pedestrians around the medina walls. Drive slowly and keep a safe distance.

Day trips from Marrakech with your car

This is where a rental car pays for itself. These are the places our customers ask about most, all covered on our Destinations page:

  • Ourika Valley: about 1 hour south of Marrakech, a green valley at the foot of the Atlas with riverside cafés and waterfalls at Setti Fatma. Go early on weekends, when it is busy with local families.
  • The Palmeraie: the palm grove on the north side of the city, quiet roads and resorts, a pleasant late-afternoon drive.
  • Oasiria Water Park: a full day out for families, on the road toward the Atlas, with its own parking.
  • Bahia Palace: inside the medina, so park outside the walls and walk or take a short taxi ride.

Which car for Marrakech?

For the motorway and summer heat, comfort and air conditioning matter more than size. An automatic such as the Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf 8 or Volkswagen T-Roc makes the long drive and city traffic easier. If you mainly need a car to get there and park it, the Hyundai Accent is an economical automatic.
